Description
You walk out of the Ocean View Hotel in a loud Hawaiian shirt, drag someone out of a Stallion, and Flash FM is already blasting before you reach the end of Ocean Drive. That first minute of GTA VC Online sets the tone for everything after it. Tommy Vercetti has just watched a drug deal go up in smoke, Sonny Forelli wants his money back, and the only person in town on his side is Ken Rosenberg, a lawyer who panics every time the phone rings. The game drops you into 1986 with no cash, no crew and a city where the Haitians, the Cubans and Ricardo Diaz’s cartel all have plans that do not include you.
Tommy Vercetti’s First Days on the Beach Side
Early in the game the map is smaller than it looks. A hurricane warning keeps the bridges shut, so the whole first act plays out on the eastern island: Ocean Beach, Washington Beach, Vice Point and the streets around the North Point Mall. Ken Rosenberg hands out the opening jobs, then Colonel Juan Garcia Cortez invites Tommy to his yacht in The Party, which is where Lance Vance shows up chasing the same stolen money. From that point the story splits between Cortez, Diaz and smaller contacts like Kent Paul and Avery Carrington, and you can bounce between them in almost any order.
Starfish Island opens after Guardian Angels, but the mainland stays locked until you finish Phnom Penh ’86 for Diaz, and that is the moment the city suddenly feels twice as big.
What new players get wrong is treating death as cheap. Get wasted or busted and Tommy wakes up outside a hospital or a police station without his guns and with a smaller wallet. The Uzi and the Ruger you saved up for at Ammu-Nation vanish in a second, so the smart habit is to grab weapons from the hideout pickups right before a hard mission rather than hauling everything around between jobs. Returning players who last saw Vice City as kids forget this rule constantly and relearn it on the first Cortez job that turns into a shootout. There is also an old trick the community calls the pier glitch: park an Ambulance against the dock fence, climb onto its roof and jump over, and the closed bridges stop mattering long before the story wants them to.
Driving, Shooting and Touch Controls in GTA VC Online
This version runs with keyboard and mouse, a gamepad, or touch controls on a phone. Keyboard players get the most precise aiming, gamepad players get the smoothest driving, and touch players get a perfectly playable build that shines in car and boat missions more than in long gunfights. Whichever input you choose, the handling is the classic one: cars slide through corners, bikes flip if you clip a curb, and boats bounce over waves like they weigh nothing.
The vehicle you pick changes how a mission feels far more than any weapon does. Most veterans settle on a short list of rides and stick with them for the whole story:
- PCJ-600 for fast trips across Ocean Beach, as long as you avoid lampposts
- Infernus or Cheetah for any job with a tight timer
- Sanchez for unique stunt jumps and the dirt track north of Downtown
- Squalo or Jetmax for water jobs that tell you to hurry
- Maverick once you find one parked on a helipad, mostly for scouting from above
Police heat climbs fast and goes up to six stars. At four stars a police helicopter and road spikes join the chase, and higher levels bring in the FBI and then the army with Rhino tanks. A Pay ‘n’ Spray clears everything if you can reach one, and the floating police star pickups the community calls bribes knock a star off as you drive through them. Learning where the bribes sit around Little Havana and Downtown saves more runs than any armor pickup.
Missions That Still Wreck Runs
Ask anyone in a GTA forum about Vice City and Demolition Man comes up in the first reply. Avery Carrington hands you an RC Goblin, a toy helicopter with a bomb bag, and asks you to plant explosives on several floors of a construction site before the clock runs out. The Goblin drifts, picking up each bag needs a careful hover, and the thin whine of that little rotor is a sound players still recognize years later. The tip that works: plan the route before you take off, tap forward in short bursts instead of holding it, and never rush the pickup.
Demolition Man is not the only wall on the way to the ending.
- Demolition Man, with the RC Goblin and its strict timer
- Supply and Demand, a water job for Ricardo Diaz that chews through your boat’s health
- Death Row, a race to the junkyard to save Lance Vance before the Diaz gang finishes him
- The Driver, a street race against Hilary King to recruit him for the bank job
- Keep Your Friends Close, the last stand at the Vercetti Estate against Sonny Forelli’s men
Difficulty in this game ramps through the mission chain rather than through tougher pedestrians. By the time you reach the El Banco Corrupto Grande robbery, armed guards hit hard and the police response starts several stars higher than anything early on. Speedrunners treat these spikes as routing problems and plan safe hideout stops between them, while casual players usually stall on one mission for an evening and then breeze through the next five. It is fair to admit that some failures feel cheap: the camera swings at the worst moment, a car flips on a tiny ramp, and the run is over through no real mistake of yours.
Building the Vercetti Empire from Diaz’s Mansion
The second half of the story revolves around property. After Rub Out, Diaz’s mansion on Starfish Island becomes the Vercetti Estate and Tommy shifts from errand boy to boss. There are 10 assets to buy, including the Malibu Club, the Print Works, Kaufman Cabs, InterGlobal Films, the Cherry Popper ice cream factory, the Boatyard and Sunshine Autos, and most of them open a short chain of their own missions. Once a chain is done, that business starts dropping cash at its door every day.
Order matters more than people expect. The Malibu Club is the one most players buy first, because its missions also push the story toward the bank job and The Driver. Saving for the expensive assets before you have any income just slows everything down.
The final chain only unlocks once the key businesses are earning, which is why completionists end up seeing every asset storyline anyway. Once Lance Vance turns on Tommy, the tone of the game changes completely, and the last mission is a long defense of the Vercetti Estate where every weapon you stockpiled finally pays off. Players who skipped the asset missions and rushed the main contacts usually hit a wall here, because the money for armor and heavy guns simply is not there.
Hidden Packages, Rampages and the Road to 100 Percent
Vice City hides 100 packages, and every 10 you collect add a new weapon pickup at Tommy’s hideouts. The first batches are worth hunting right away because they put armor and better guns next to your save point for the rest of the story. Add 35 rampages, 36 unique stunt jumps and a pile of vehicle side jobs, and 100 percent becomes a project of its own.
The side jobs each pay off in a specific way. Vigilante in a police car builds toward extra armor, Paramedic in an Ambulance gives Tommy unlimited sprint, Firefighter makes him fireproof, and the Pizza Boy run raises his health cap. Completionists stack these early so the later story missions play on easier terms. The biggest reward of all sits at Fort Baxter Air Base, where the Hunter attack helicopter becomes available after full completion.
Then there are the cheats, typed straight in on a keyboard. THUGSTOOLS hands out a full weapon set, ASPIRINE refills health, PRECIOUSPROTECTION tops up armor and LEAVEMEALONE wipes the wanted level. Purists argue that using them before the bridges open ruins the slow climb from nobody to kingpin, while others see them as the whole point of loading Vice City for a quick session of chaos on Ocean Drive.
GTA VC Online Questions From New and Returning Players
How do you unlock the mainland in Vice City?
The bridges to the mainland open after you finish Phnom Penh ’86, a helicopter gunner mission for Ricardo Diaz where Lance Vance flies and Tommy shoots. Before that, Guardian Angels opens the route to Starfish Island. If you want the mainland earlier, the pier glitch with an Ambulance parked against the dock fence gets Tommy across on foot.
How do you beat Demolition Man with the RC Goblin?
Fly slowly and use short taps on the throttle instead of holding it, because the RC Goblin overshoots every time you push too hard. Pick up each bomb bag from a steady hover, drop it on the marked spot, and plan your route through the construction site floors before you take off. Most failed attempts come from crashing into scaffolding, not from the timer itself.
Why is Keep Your Friends Close not showing up?
The final mission needs your asset businesses to be up and running, so check which properties still have unfinished mission chains. The Malibu Club, the Print Works and the other income assets have to be earning before the marker for the last job appears at the Vercetti Estate. Once it unlocks, stock up on armor at the Vercetti Estate before starting, because Sonny Forelli’s men come in waves.
GTA VC Online keeps everything that made Tommy Vercetti’s story stick: the slow climb from the Ocean View Hotel to the Vercetti Estate, the RC Goblin nightmare in Demolition Man, the bribes and Pay ‘n’ Spray dashes, and the pastel sunset over Ocean Drive with Wave 103 on the radio. Take the asset missions seriously, hunt the first hidden packages early, and the final showdown with Sonny Forelli plays out exactly the way it should.
