Description

What happens when the fish you have been quietly growing for the last ten minutes turns a corner and finds something bigger than itself waiting there? In Refished that moment resets your whole plan, because the food chain never stops moving just because you got comfortable.

Genre Underwater survival
Platform PC
Core loop Feed, grow, and climb a living food chain
Modes Singleplayer exploration, Deathmatch (in development)

Starting Small in Refished

You begin small and hungry, and Refished makes sure you feel both immediately. Hunger ticks down in the background no matter what you are doing, and a fish that ignores it for too long is a fish that starts losing health instead. The early minutes are about learning what you can safely swallow and what will swallow you first.

This is not a game that eases you in with a tutorial zone free of danger. A Piranha or a Crab can end an early run just as easily as anything larger, since smaller predators are often faster and more aggressive than their size suggests.

Players coming in expecting a slow cozy swim tend to get a rude introduction within the first few minutes.

The Living Food Chain and Its Creatures

Every creature in Refished has a role, and that role shifts depending on what you have grown into. A Crayfish that looked threatening when you were tiny becomes an easy meal once you outgrow it, while a Dolphin that ignored you earlier will suddenly register as a serious threat.

  • Piranha — fast, aggressive, dangerous in numbers
  • Crab and Pirate Crab — slow but capable of surprising damage
  • Squid — a mid-tier predator with its own ambush pattern
  • Dolphin — one of the larger threats once you are past the early game

Knowing which of these you can hunt and which one is currently hunting you is the entire skill curve. Refished does not spell it out with a health bar comparison, so you learn it by watching how a creature moves before you commit to engaging it.

Growing and Unlocking New Species

Feeding successfully in Refished does more than satisfy hunger. It lets you grow, and growing eventually unlocks new species to play as, each with distinct bodies, speeds, and behaviors. A species built for speed handles the Coral Reef sections differently than a slower, tankier one built to absorb hits.

By the time you reach a mid-tier species, your relationship with the map changes. Areas that forced you to flee earlier become territory you actively hunt in, and the same Coral Reef that hid you from predators now hides prey for you instead.

Exploring the Maps and Coral Reef Zones

Refished’s handcrafted environments reward exploration beyond just finding food. The Coral Reef areas in particular offer tight cover that smaller creatures use defensively and larger ones use to ambush anything passing through.

Terrain plays a bigger role than it first appears. Getting pinned against rocks or reef structure while something bigger closes in is a specific kind of death players bring up often when comparing close calls.

Multiplayer Deathmatch, Still in Development

A Deathmatch mode built on Mirror networking is part of Refished’s roadmap, though it is not available to play yet. The idea extends the same growth and food chain logic into direct competition between players instead of AI-driven creatures, which changes the calculation considerably since human opponents don’t move like the game’s creature AI does.

Players already active in the community talk about this mode frequently, mostly speculating on how a food chain built around AI behavior will hold up once other players are the unpredictable variable.

What is the best way to survive the early game in Refished?

Stay small and cautious near Piranha and Crab populations, since both are fast enough to punish careless feeding. Prioritize growth over exploration until you have outgrown the most common early threats.

Can you play as different species in Refished?

Yes, growing and progressing unlocks new playable creatures, each with its own speed and body type suited to different parts of the map, including the Coral Reef zones.

Is Refished multiplayer available yet?

Not currently. The Deathmatch mode built on Mirror is in development and not yet playable, though singleplayer exploration and survival are fully available now.

Refished keeps circling back to the same tension: whatever you have grown into, something in the Coral Reef or open water is sizing you up the same way you are sizing up everything smaller than you, and that constant pressure is what makes Refished worth returning to.
